The McMurdo SmartFind S5A is a Class A AIS SART transponder developed for search-and-rescue operations compliant with IMO SOLAS standards.
When activated in an emergency, it automatically broadcasts the vessel’s or lifeboat’s exact position via the AIS network, enabling nearby ships and rescue authorities to pinpoint the distress location on their ECDIS, radar or chart plotter displays.
