First steps after an emergency at sea: What to do?

Maritime security

When an incident occurs at sea, every second counts. Here’s a basic guide on how to act quickly.

  1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation: Determine the level of danger and whether you need to activate the VHF radio or send a distress signal.
  2. Activate Emergency Equipment: Use flares, strobe lights, or EPIRB beacons to signal your location to rescue teams.
  3. Ensure Crew Buoyancy: Check that everyone is wearing life jackets and is attached to the boat or a flotation device.
  4. Deploy the Liferaft if Necessary: If evacuation is required, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and verify its contents.

At OscarSierra, in addition to selling EPIRBs, flares, and flotation devices, we offer a certification and inspection service to ensure your safety equipment is in perfect condition.

If you haven’t seen the video where Max Westwood tells the story of how they collided with a fruit cargo ship while they were sleeping, here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDZ3Wt6MZEE

📌 Tip: Conduct emergency drills with your crew to familiarize them with safety protocols.
