With the arrival of summer and the significant increase in recreational boating in Balearic waters, Maritime Rescue has intensified its operational deployment across the archipelago to ensure a more effective response to potential maritime emergencies.
At OscarSierra, we welcome this reinforcement, which is coordinated from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Palma under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The objective is to enhance maritime safety during the months of highest nautical activity in the Balearic Islands.
One of the main developments is the deployment of the Guardamar Concepción Arenal in Ibiza. This rescue patrol vessel—one of only five of its kind in Spain—is specifically designed for search and rescue (SAR) operations. With a length of 32 to 40 meters, powerful diesel engines capable of reaching 27 knots, and a range of up to 1,000 nautical miles, it is a vital asset for maritime protection. It is crewed by a permanent team of eight highly qualified professionals.
In addition, coverage has been reinforced with six Salvamar-type vessels, a tugboat, a helicopter, and four rescue boats operated by the Red Cross. Operating hours and intervention zones have also been expanded in Formentera, Menorca, and Sant Antoni de Portmany, significantly improving response capacity along the coast.
For example, in Formentera, a rescue boat is now operating daily from the port of La Savina through mid-September. In Sant Antoni, the service has been extended to operate 24 hours a day.
